Does anyone know when phase 4 - the relief road for the relief road - will be finished?

According to the PUN the council don't want to fix the various issues in the Shared Space area until the A6MARR is open, presumably because the are hoping all the lorries and cars going between Macclesfield and Stockport will then magically disappear and give us space for more roadworks. So there is one reason to hope they don't get delayed for much longer.

The flooding issues can't have come as much of a surprise - it was easy enough at the time to find out that the land they were building on was naturally saturated and it was mentioned in the planning app. I guess they were just hoping that it wouldn't rain, cos it hardly ever does near Manchester.

Closure of A555 Westbound from 12th February for 17 Weeks
Jan 25, 2018 | News

Essential maintenance works need to be carried out on the A555 to repair problems with the highway drainage that is causing a depression to form within the carriageway. If the problem is not rectified, it could lead to the collapse of the carriageway. The repair works required are extensive and include: excavation to approximately 5 metres below the existing road level, installation of temporary steel sheet piles to support the excavation, replacement of the damaged drainage, backfilling of the excavation and resurfacing.

During the works, the A555 westbound from the A34 to Wilmslow Road needs to be closed 24 hours a day for a period of 17 weeks from 12th February. The closure is needed for safety of the workforce and road users. The signed diversion route will be via the A34 northbound, B5094 Stanley Road westbound and B5353 Wilmslow Road southbound.

We are working to keep disruption to a minimum, including timing the works to take place over the school half term and Easter holidays. The traffic management will be under continuous review and, if feasible, sections of carriageway will be opened up as soon as it is safe to do so.

The repair works will be carried out by the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road (A6MARR) contractor, Carillion Morgan Sindall, who will also carry out works as part of the A6MARR scheme within the closure as part of efforts to minimise overall disruption in the area.

Regular updates will be provided via the SEMMMS website as the works progress. In particular, we encourage road users to view weekly updates about traffic management that will be in place at

We apologise for delays to journeys caused by the works.

My sense of foreboding eased when I reached the bit that says that it only affects the A555 west of the A34, so traffic bound for Gatley or Handforth Dean should not be affected. Whoever wrote that must have been on autopilot, as Carillion went bust some time ago.

However the A555 will be closed this Sunday. I'm not sure if this includes closing Woodford Road as well.

Call me an old cynic. How long have they known about this, I wonder? How long have they known that the SEMMMS work would be further delayed from the already delayed finish date? What a perfect whitewash-type excuse for the whole project to be delayed for a further 17 weeks as they won't want a new bypass feeding into the jam. Sure thing is that I won't be going to Buy and Queue at Stanley Green for some months! (Or any similar retailer within a mile) The traffic around there will be horrendous.

I was told by site workers before the Carillion collapse was announced that the completion date was Winter 2018
