Anyone got any interesting stories about their wartime exploits?
Me first. My grandad died in November 1918, Cambrai, Northern France. His brother died at the Battle of the Somme 1/6/16 and was awarded the DCM for his bravery during a trench raid on June 30th when he rescued his comrades and a wounded officer who were spotted and came under fire.

Like you, my grandfather died in 1918 at the battle of Bethune.

His only son, my father, was wounded in Belgium in 1940 and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the skirmish in which he was wounded.
He received a letter asking whether they should send it to him, or would he rather come to Buckingham Palace and be decorated with it personally by the King. To the abject horror of his entire family he replied "just put it in the post please". Shortly after, he bought Hope Green in Poynton which is now a care home.
