Six of us - three rangers, me and two lads - spent a backbreaking three hours removing balsam from an area of about 10 square yards in which it had killed off everything else - even including bramble - plus some adjacent areas.
At every entrance to Happy Valley there is a notice about himalayan balsam, explaining what it is, the problems it causes, and that you may see people removing the weed - and feel free to do the same yourselves. Despite this several people asked us what the plant was that we were removing, and why we were removing it. I never cease to be amazed by the lack of interest of the general public. Not a single person who asked us about it, or passed whilst walking their dogs, offered to help in any way. If everybody pulled up even a dozen plants where they saw them, the problem could be contained much more effectively.
OK end of rant. If you want to help, there are two further bashes, on August 8th and September 12th.
