A contact has let me know of a couple of scams reported in the Grove in late May and early June:
1. A guy telling elderly people that the Council will repair their fence without charge. He keeps the householder talking while his mate creeps in to see what he/she can lift.
2. Something similar, except that the first guy says the water needs turning off, and the cupboard under the kitchen sink has to be emptied, because of work he's doing at a neighbour's house. This distracts the householder, and, again, enables his mate to creep in and grab what he/she can from the rest of the house.
Both these blokes came to the back door of the properties either via a back entry, or down the side of the house, rather than to the front door. You wonder why people fall for this sort of thing, but they seem to be targeting older people with friendly, helpful and plausible patter.
Spread the word to anyone you know ...
