IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON Your Household Waste Recycling Centres In Stockport

ROSE HILL RECYCLING FACILITY RE-OPENING
Rose Hill (Railway Road, Marple, Stockport, SK6 6HU) Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC)

From 8am on Tuesday 21st December 2010 the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), Rose Hill (Marple), will reopen to the public.
This is great news for local residents who will have the benefit of a new and improved service ahead of schedule and in time for the festive season.
The HWRC at Rose Hill has been modernised, with a more convenient layout to reduce queuing and new signage making recycling even easier.

AS a result of the opening of the redeveloped facility at Rose Hill the Torkington Road Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) will CLOSE.
To allow for residents who use the Torkington Road facility to become familiar with the NEW Rose Hill facility and so that we can continue to provide ample capacity over the busy festive period the Torkington Road facility will permanently close from 6pm on Monday 10th January 2011. Site users will be redirected to the NEW Rose Hill Facility.

WHAT WILL THE REDEVELOPMENT MEAN FOR ME?
The Rose Hill facility is part of a fully integrated waste management service for Greater Manchester, providing a range of new infrastructure and services in order to boost recycling and recovery across the region.
The Recycling facility at Rose Hill has undergone significant redevelopment with significant investment to ensure that we can provide the Stockport area and its residents world class household recycling facilities. Together with the other HWRC’s at Bredbury which was redeveloped earlier in the year and Adswood where redevelopments are planned in early 2011, the Rose Hill facility will offer improved facilities and allow better waste separation to maximise recycling levels.
Site efficiency will be improved with the introduction of working on two-levels, separating operational and public vehicles, making traffic movement through the facility easier. The queuing capacity will be increased on-site to reduce off-site queuing on Railway Road.
The new facility at Rose Hill will allow for separation of up to 21 different material types ranging from garden waste, cardboard, small and large electrical items, tyres, fridges and textiles.

Why does Torkington Road have to close?
The Torkington Road facility is not able to accommodate such a redevelopment that Rose Hill has undergone as the site footprint is too small. The redevelopments mean that we can improve our service by maximising recycling by increasing the separation of materials.
Significant investment has therefore been made in the Rose Hill facility to provide a much improved and modern facility for the Stockport’s residents.

I don't mind going to Rose Hill: it's only an extra five minutes either way, and presumably there won't be any need to queue for ten minutes on summer weekends - or even some summer weekdays!

But I do think people have some justification if they get irritated by the relentlessly positive and artificially upbeat corporate-speak from the communications team at Greater Manchester's contractor Viridor which heads this post. The loss of the Torkington facility is a diminution of service, however it's dressed up. Unlike some here, I can see why they've done it, but it's a bit patronizing to local people to over-egg it as if the new arrangements are an unqualified improvement! Just tell it how it is ...
